TOP 10 MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR HEAVY-DUTY TARPAULINS

A heavy-duty PVC tarpaulin is a significant investment. With basic care, a quality tarp should last 5–10 years. Without it, you may be replacing it within 18 months. Here are the ten most important maintenance practices.

1. Clean After Every Use in Harsh Conditions

Salt water, agricultural chemicals, and industrial fluids degrade PVC over time. After exposure, rinse with fresh water and allow to dry before storing.

2. Dry Before Storing

Storing a wet tarpaulin leads to mildew growth between the layers. Even UV-stabilised PVC can develop surface mould that weakens the material over time.

3. Roll, Don't Fold

Repeated folding creates crease lines that eventually crack the PVC coating. Always roll your tarpaulin and secure with straps. Store the roll horizontally off the ground.

4. Inspect Eyelets Monthly

Eyelet failure is the most common cause of tarpaulin damage. A torn eyelet puts stress on the surrounding material and quickly creates a large tear. Replace or repair damaged eyelets immediately.

5. Repair Small Tears Promptly

A 10mm tear under wind load becomes a 500mm tear very quickly. PVC repair tape and cold-weld adhesive can handle most small repairs in the field.

6. Avoid Prolonged UV Exposure When Not in Use

Even UV-stabilised PVC degrades faster when left exposed to direct sunlight while not in use. Store in a cool, shaded location.

7. Use Proper Tie-Down Technique

Over-tightening rope or straps through eyelets creates stress concentrations. Use spreader bars or additional eyelets for very tight securing requirements.

8. Keep Away From Sharp Edges

Metal edges on truck bodies, containers, and machinery cut through PVC quickly. Fit rubber edge protectors on contact points or use additional padding.

9. Avoid Contact With Oils and Solvents

Petroleum-based products, paint thinners, and many solvents attack PVC plasticisers, causing the material to become stiff and brittle. Clean any spills immediately with soapy water.

10. Service Annually

Once a year, lay the tarpaulin out flat and inspect every square metre. Look for thin spots, delamination, eyelet wear, and seam separation. A small repair now prevents a large replacement cost later.
